FIRST CIRCULAR SIXTH ANNUAL CONFERENCE
OF THE SIEF WORKING GROUP ON THE RITUAL YEAR
NEOPAGAN RITUALS AND TRADITIONAL COSMOLOGIES to be held in Dobogókő, Hungary on 4-7 June 2010 Dear Colleague, In the name of the Hungarian Association for the Academic Study for
Religions, and the SIEF Working Group on The Ritual Year, we have the honour to invite you to Dobogókő, Hungary, for the sixth annual conference of the ritual year working group. The Ritual Year
Working Group (www.theritualyear.com) was established in 2004 under the aegis of SIEF, Societé Internationale d’Ethnologie et de Folklore
(www.siefhome.org). The Executive Board consists of Emily Lyle (President), Irina Sedakova (Secretary) and Aude Le Borgne (Treasurer).
The general theme is NEOPAGAN RITUALS AND TRADITIONAL COSMOLOGIES.
The language of presentations at the conference will be English, but discussion may take place also in other languages with the help of colleagues prepared to offer instant translation. After the
fall of the communist regimes, several neopagan movements gained special strength in Eastern Europe. These movements prepared the new renaissance of the national identity, and their ideological
background is the prechristian (or thought to be prechristian) religious ideas. As social censure ended, there was an opportunity to organise the rituals openly, and they attracted more and more
participants. Of course the process of the re-invention or re-creation of “pagan” rituals is well known from other parts of the world as well. Research into these modern rituals and comparative
studies are welcome These and many other topics related to the ritual year will be discussed during the conference.

During the Prophets Conference Ancient Sacred Site odyssey of Southern England, our outstanding group teacher Freddy Silva will be joined by Leo Rutherford, a well-known student and practitioner of shamanism who will be leading us in shamanic sunrise ceremony within the stone circle at Stonehenge, one of the most mysterious and powerful places in Celtic history and legend.
Our Ancient roots are shamanism wherever we live and whatever sort of culture we have grown up in. It is our spiritual heritage. Look back far enough in time
and all of us come from shamanistic cultures. Long before such recent concepts as organised religion, humans sought understanding and knowledge of the wider universe using a variety of
experiential ways and tools which are just as applicable today as ever. These practices are still in use in a surprisingly large number of places in the world and many shamans of indigenous
cultures are now teaching Westerners.
Shamanism is the oldest spiritual path on planet earth for maintaining healing and harmony in society and the individual and keeping our connection with
mother earth and all creation. Our outer world may be different, but our human inner landscape has the same components as always. Our outer health and wholeness is an expression of our inner
health and holiness. We are here to bring spirit into matter and matter to spirit.
The shamanic ceremony is an ancient but eternally relevant way to contact the timeless reality that exists parallel to and just out of sight of the world we
so mistakenly call the 'real world'. It is here in the everyday that we experience the reflections of who we are, of our actions, our deepest beliefs, our 'dreams', but it is in the non-manifest
world of the spirit that the hidden causal interactions take place. Hidden, that is, until we begin to open the doors and 'see' with an expanded vision.
For us, at our private dawn ceremony at Stonehenge, as sentient modern day beings, we will tune into the energies that are there and open ourselves to
knowledge through experience. Through the act of ceremony — by stopping the world — we will attune ourselves to the ancient energies present and invite them to speak to us and through
us. It is our ancestors who created this amazing place and we can call back in time to them for guidance in the present day. We exist only because of our ancestors and our ancestors continue to
exist through us. Let us see what we can do to collapse time and vision into the past so that we come to see our present more clearly.
Leo Rutherford founded Eagle's Wing Centre for Contemporary Shamanism in 1987 after training with such respected teachers as Hyemeyohsts Storm, Harley Swiftdeer, Prem Das, Gabrielle Roth,
and Joan Halifax. More recently he has trained with Don Eduardo Calderon, an Inca shaman in Peru. His teachings are rooted in Native American (North, Central, and South) traditions, with
particular emphasis on the medicine wheel and the teachings of the ancient Mayans. Rutherford is the author of four well regarded and readable books exploring shamanism.

During The Prophets Conference Southern England Sojourn, you will be taken back in time to immerse yourself in ancient civilizations with fundamentally
different world views than the one with which you find yourself engaged today. Many who travel back with us through the mists of time reach realizations that could be accounted for as past life
memories. This may be your case, and you will find certainty when you enter the rings of Stonehenge and Avebury or the barrows and pagan power places atop hills and beneath cathedrals. Looking
down from the top of the Glastonbury Tor you find yourself transported back to the time that this was the magic Isle of Avalon. Like many who have gone before, you find solace in this ancient way
of seeing. In so doing, you bring back to today fresh perspectives empowering and enabling your engagement with the fundamental changes taking place within yourself and your world. The past
becomes prelude to something that could be wonderful.

2009 à la Fête de Edge, Wenlock Edge dans le Shropshire
Le Paganisme, l’Education et l’Université
La conférence a pour sujet tous les aspects du paganisme et la façon dont ils sont étudiés et enseignés en Grande-Bretagne et sur le plan international, en particulier, mais pas de façon exclusive, dans les Iles britanniques. Une partie de la Fête de Edge doit permettre aux participants d’aborder les manifestations relatives aux merveilleuses histoires concernées, dans une perspective prometteuse ainsi que le merveilleux décor offert par Wenlock Edge. Le paganisme a de nombreux points en commun avec la tradition orale puisque ses traditions sacrées précèdent l’invention de l’écriture (3000 AEC) d’environ 100 000 ans ! C’est souvent dans les histoires, mythes et légendes contés de générations en générations que la connaissance païenne fut, et est encore, transmise. La demeure humaine la plus ancienne dans les monts du Shropshire retrace peut-être un très long chemin ; près du Pays de Galles, on découvrit des restes humains à Pontnewydd Cave dans la vallée de la Rivière Elwy, remontant à 230 000 ans ! Quels sentiers religieux nos ancêtres suivirent-ils ? Quelles fois les inspirèrent-ils tout au long de leur voyage jusqu’à notre monde contemporain et à ses lieux ? Wenlock Edge date lui-même de 410 à 355 millions d’années. Face à de tels intervalles de temps, l’humanité contemporaine a certainement besoin de cultiver un certain degré d’humilité, cesser ses guerres et conflits religieux et considérer la sagesse des anciens avec révérence.
Nous invitions tous les universitaires, enseignants et éducateurs de Grande-Bretagne qui sont, soit connus comme païens pratiquants, soit qui ont un intérêt universitaire pour le paganisme en tant que domaine d’étude, au sens le plus large du terme. Les sujets pourraient inclure l’étude et la pratique : du Druidisme, de la Wicca, du chamanisme, des religions préhistoriques, des religions classiques grecques et romaines, des religions égyptiennes, slaves, germaniques, nordiques et anglo-saxonnes, des religions amérindiennes, africaines, polynésiennes, indiennes et asiatiques etc. La conférence se donne bien pour but de faire avancer l’érudition, d’étudier tous les aspects du paganisme et de promouvoir un débat sain sur les contributions du paganisme à la civilisation mondiale et à la culture. Dans un monde où la religion est trop souvent une source de polarisation et de conflit, nous sommes avides de comprendre les possibilités créatives entre les communautés religieuses et d'explorer la façon dont les traditions païennes orales anciennes sous-tendent souvent les religions révélées plus récentes. Les enseignants intéressés par le paganisme et par le fait d’inscrire le statut du paganisme au programme national et dans les dispositions légales de l’Education religieuse sont également les bienvenus et sont invités à participer.
L’une des issues possibles peut être d’explorer l’idée d’établir une Ecole païenne et/ou un Collège quelque part en Europe et d’en examiner la faisabilité. La conférence est ouverte soit à tous les éducateurs travaillant déjà au sein des systèmes éducatifs officiels, soit à ceux travaillant au sein d’autres structures éducatives et de projets, hors système dominant. Une autre question est l’examen des « pagan studies » au sein du programme national et spécifiquement, au sein du programme éducatif religieux couramment offert dans les écoles en Grande-Bretagne et à travers l’Europe.
Plusieurs enseignants émérites et penseurs païens ont été invités à s’exprimer et à soumettre leurs points de vue sur le thème de la conférence. En outre, nous lançons un appel à communication de la part d’universitaires et d’enseignants à travers la Grande-Bretagne et l’étranger, intéressés par l’avancement de la connaissance et de la recherche de tout aspect du paganisme ou de l’éducation au sens le plus large du terme. Les étudiants et les érudits de tous les départements et toutes les facultés sont les bienvenus, qu’ils soient issus ou non des sciences religieuses.
Un ticket d’entrée au festival permet aussi d’entrer à la conférence du Réseau universitaire païen qui aura lieu de 13 à 16 heures. L’événement a lieu à Stokes Barnes, situé près de Much Wenlock, à la sortie de la A458, de Shrewsburyà Bridgnorth Road dans la région des les monts Shropshire Hills.
